The park was formed in 1989 and it expands to 50.288 hectares and includes 21 town in the province of L'Aquila. Here are the Gole di Celano, a magnificient canyon closer to the city of Celano, capital city of the Marsica area and birthplace of Tommaso da Celano, disciple of St. Francis of Assisi.
The path of the Canyon of Celano is the most popular track and it draws tourists year-round, especially during summer and at the beginning of autumn. Alba Fucens, an ancient Romanic town, appeals to many travelers, it sets at 1000 meters, surrounded by the Velino Mountain and the Lake of Fucino. The remains of the town are on display at the National Archeological Museum of Chieti. We recommend to visit the valley of Teve, a dense green area closer to the Regional Park of Sirente-Velino. The habitat of the valley consists of a naturalistic treasure with many rare bird species, such as the griffon, the common raven and the golden eagle. Here are also many amphibious animals: the salamander and the triturus; reptiles such as the lizard and several species of poisonous snakes find here an ideal habitat.
