The origin of the village is very antique and it had a great importance in the history of the South Italy. It is located on a rocky spur and it belongs to the association "I borghi più belli d'Italia".
The fortress of Civitella is the largest in Italy and one of the most impressive military building, on the top of a rocky cliff, it is about 500 metres long and 45 metres wide, for a total surface of 25,000 square metres. Erected in the 10 century and after reinforced, it represents the last stronghold of the Kingdom of the two Sicilies, surrendered to the Piedmont troops.
The old town is noted for its beautiful churches and palaces and the cozy atmosphere through the narrow streets.
Upon the portal of Naples there is the coat of arms of the town with five towers and walking through the enchanting streets towards the square of Francesco Filippi Pepe it is possible to admire the magnificent view from the Mountain of Flowers, Monti della Laga and the peaks of Gran Sasso mountain.
In the square of Pietro Rosati takes place the monument Wade, a memorial dedicated to the Irish army official Matteo Wafe, guardian of the fortress during the French siege in 1806. The marble statue is made by the Neapolitan Tito Angelini.
The Franciscan convent of St. Maria dei Lumi is three kilometers far from the town and houses the valuable polychrome wood statue, La Madonna con il Bambino, one of the most ancient in the Abruzzo region.
