The name of the village derives from Latin inter acquas "inside the water", since the town is surrounded by many water sprigs and creeks between the valley of St. Antonio and the valley of Contra.

The stone-made bell tower dominates the medieval village, representing the robustness of the town, indeed it withstood five earthquakes.

In the old town sets the austere medieval tower dating back to the 13th century and around the building the residential area was established with beautiful panoramic views, churches and palaces.

The patron saint is St. Feliciano and his remains are conserved in the church Madre della SS. Annunziata, erected during the 15th century .

The church of Santissima Trinità, the church of St. Antonio, the church of Addolorata and the rural church of St. Giovanni Battista are well worth a visit.
